Renewal of Bachelor of Science in Environmental Sciences curriculum
The Department of Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences (EOAS) and the Institute for Resources, Environment and Sustainability (IRES) are partnering to renew and expand the Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Environmental Sciences (ENSC).
Updated Specialization Objectives (SO) and Learning Goals (LG) are being drafted that:
- Centre climate change and its intersections of with other environmental and equity concerns
- Highlight data analysis, computational, and problem-solving skills
- Add exposure to different knowledge systems
- Make connections to complementary fields of study (policy, law, planning etc…)
- Create connections to diverse professionals in the environmental sector and opportunities to develop a professional identity
- Require experiential learning
The team is working to revise and expand the areas of concentration, allowing students to choose a relevant focus in this interdisciplinary specialization. New core courses, including required courses in climate science, solutions, and ethics, are in development. Room the in specialization will be made for complementary studies, with emphases on fields that intersect with environmental science. The revised specialization will better prepare more environmental science students to take on climate change/environment/sustainability roles in industry, local and federal governments, NGOs, and the like.
